BUXTON is a village located approximately twelve miles from Georgetown, the capital city of Guyana. The village was built on land purchased by former slaves, and it remains a predominantly Black Guyanese community. The village of Buxton-Friendship historically started out as separate villages that were purchased and built by freed African slaves, they were amalgamated into one around 1840-1841. By the beginning of the nineteen sixties, Buxton-Friendship was possibly the most progressive and prosperous village in Guyana. Buxton is known for its numerous scholars and fertile backlands. One of the main crops grown in the backlands is the Buxton Spice mango. This mango is fleshy and sweet like others, but is distinguished by its unique spicy taste.
